New Students
For new students, orientations will be held at 10:00am the Friday before
the Monday start date. During this time, they will:
- Learn the best ways to get to the school
- Have a general orientation and tour of the school
- Pay tuition
- Pick up texts
- Complete placement test (including oral section)
- Fill out emergency contact information
- Meet instructors
- Meet other students
- Learn about F-1 policies for international students

IELTS®
Are you interested in entering a university or improving your general
skills for professional purposes? In receiving a qualification that’s
recognized worldwide? The goal of this class is to prepare you for the
IELTS®, the International English
Language Testing System, recognized widely by community
colleges and universities as an alternative to the TOEFL® . In-class
instruction will be supplemented by one practice test per week outside
of class, including graded writing and speaking. At the end of the course
students will have the opportunity of simulating the test-taking experience
with a mock exam, on a Saturday. Textbook required. Our instructor is one of only 11 IELTS® examiners certified by the British
Council and UW, the sole testing center in Washington State. She has over
8 years' experience teaching IELTS® for universities and businesses.
TOEFL® iBT
Accelerated TOEFL Seminar(ATS) This course is designed to intensively prepare intermediate to advanced ESL students for the new TOEFL iBT exam. In addition to receiving an in-depth overview of the four components (listening, grammar, reading, writing), students will be trained in custom test-taking techniques for maximizing scores. Instruction will include live and computerized in-class exercises supplemented by quizzes and homework outside of class. All students will receive personal feedback on their speaking and writing output. Two full-length, computer-based practice TOEFL iBT exams will be administered on two Saturdays. Textbooks required.
Prerequisites:
* Intermediate English proficiency or past TOEFL score ( 40 iBT, 133 CBT, or 450 paper TOEFL)
* Basic computer proficiency
* Personal Computer with internet access and printer
Practical Communication
The following classes are appropriate for you if your goal is to
communicate effectively in an English-speaking environment, and ours is
to help you succeed in that endeavor. Some of our classes focus on a particular
skill; others use an integrated-skills approach. You can choose to take
just one, two, three or all four. All are offered at the high-intermediate/
advanced level. Structure and Speaking are also offered at the low-intermediate/
intermediate level. These are highly interactive classes, with lots of
opportunity to practice and interact with the instructor.
Structure
Here you will focus on polishing your structural knowledge of English
through the study of common grammar and syntax trouble-spots, vocabulary
and principles of pronunciation. You will be presented with language samples
in context and given explanations and opportunities to practice. The goal
is for you to integrate the material into the language that you produce,
whether in other SLA evening classes or in your life in general. Thus,
this course can be taken as additional support for another class or alone.
Writing for Specific Purposes
In this course you will build confidence in your writing skills by increasing
your ability to compose memos, e-mails, letters and even short compositions
in English. Course sessions will be organized as a writing lab: brief
introduction of the model and objectives, ideas to get you started, time
for you to write and plenty of interaction with the instructor. You will
also have the option of pursuing an individual project of your choice.
The aim is for you to produce writing that clearly expresses your thoughts
and meets your personal and professional goals.
Speaking for Specific Purposes
The goal of this class is to help you get your point across aurally. You
will gain skills in a variety of speaking situations, both social and
professional. Through role-plays, modeling on authentic materials and
classroom discussion you will practice everyday conversation, presentation-making
and participation in meetings. Active theme-based lessons will provide
ample opportunity to speak and receive teacher feedback, improving your
pronunciation and expanding your vocabulary and knowledge of conversational
structures in English.
